1 | Obituary: Funeral services for Evan B.Evans, 73, were held at 11:00 a. m., on Monday, December 6 at Kotrba Chapel with Elder Herb Mead, of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, officiating. Interment was made in the IOOF Cemetery with arrangements under the direction of Kotrba Funeral Home. Casketbearers were Russell Garry, Bennie Chocholousek, Willis Wendell, Dale Butler, Albert Ulmer and Howard Horton. Register attendant was Mrs. Donald Esterling; Mrs. Gerald Fogel, vocalist, was accompanied by Mrs. Herman Vanden Bosch at the organ. Mr. Evans was born April 10, 1898 in Lucas, Iowa, the third eldest child of John T. and Elizabeth Ann Evans and died at the Gregory Community Hospital on Sunday, December. 5, 1971. Although it was not until 1963 that E. B. and his wife, Evelyn moved to Gregory, it was here the strong ties of lasting friends were cemented. He was a life long member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and was active here as the Church Treasurer. He was also active with the Tilton Motor Company as an agent for the Farmer's Insurance group. "E.B." was always ready to help his fellow man and enriching life in this manner. Survivors are his widow, Evelyn; five sons, Evan Charles, Wendell, Edward and Robert Evans, and Martin Tilton, one daughter, Mrs.Joyce Noteboom, son-in-law Ken, daughters -in-law Agnes, Ruth, Evelyn and Janice; sisters, Mrs. Sarah E. Hervey, Mrs. Albert (Irene) Baker, Mrs. R. L. (Gwen) Amsberry, Mrs. J. E. (Viola) Fine, and Mrs. C. C. (Doris) Deitrick; three brothers, John R., Thomas H., and David S.; and many bereaved nieces, nephews, cousins, grandchildren and friends. 2 | Thomas Hayes was born in 1811 in O'Callahan Roman Catholic Parish, located in Killuran Civil Parish in County Clare, Ireland. He arrived in the United States on July 5, 1837 at the port of New York on the Ship Nestor, sailing out of Liverpool. He is listed on the ship roster as a laborer and his total possessions consisted of one box and one bedroll. He was traveling with John Ryan also from Ireland and possibly the same John Ryan who married his sister Margaret. Thomas applied for citizenship on Oct 4, 1842 in Husdon, Colombia County, Wisconsin. Washington County Wisconsin was formed in 1840 after the Menomonee and Pottawatomie Indian Tribes were moved west of the Mississiippi River. the first land in Richfield township was purchased in 1841 with two sales of government land in that year. In the fall of 1842 land was sold to the first fifty settlers in Richfield township, who were seventy five percent German and twenty five percent Irish. Thomas Hayes purchased 80 acres of land in Washington County, Section 13 Richland township on Nov 3, 1842. He was granted citizenship in Richland county on Nov 11, 1847 and is listed on the November 1847 poll list. On November 11, 1848 he purchased 40 more acres of land. Thomas became a prominent citizen in the community, serving as a county supervisor for two terms, 18544-1855. He was a member of the state assembly in 1856. The Washington county agricultural society was formed in 1855, and Thomas Hayes was elected to the committee of arrangements. He is listed in the 1860 census with property valued at $3000. Thomas Married Anne Gordon, and their first child was born in 1843 in Wisconsin. Anne was born in 1823 in Coothill, County Cavan, Ireland. She was of Scotch-Irish descent and a Presbyterian. Anne died January 31, 1866, shortly after the birth of her ninth child George, who also died in 1866. Anne is buried in Germantown, Wisconsin. Thomas married again to an Irish woman named Bridget, who is listed as his wife on the 1880 census and was age 48 in 1880. Thomas died May 28, 1882, and is buried in Germantown, Wisconsin. Anne had two sisters Jane, who married a Reilly, and Ellen. Thomas had four brothers and sisters who also immigrated to America. They were Margaret, Roger, Patrick and Dennis.
